The Emerging Tech Trends and Their Impacts – Savvycom COO Interview
As we are saying goodbye to the year of the Sheep, technology trend topic is in our spotlight. We had a special talk with Mr. Minh Nguyen. As a Chief Operating Officer, since 2009, Minh has helped built up Savvycom to a top software outsourcing company in Vietnam today. He has managed various software development projects and always impressed clients with his extensive technical knowledge, skills and his credibility. We had a good conversation about Minh’s reflection on some big technologies and trends of 2015, which are IoT, SMAC, Virtual Reality. Now let’s have a look on what we discussed in details:
What are the top technologies that you see in 2015?
In my opinion, 2015 has been a prosperous year for many technologies. However, I am really concerned with the significant emergence of these following: Internet of Things, S.M.A.C and Virtual Reality or Augmented Reality.

Regarding IoT, I bet we all now have become more familiar with smart devices, which have the ability to gather data and connect to the Internet around us. We can easily buy a Smart TV, a smartwatch (products from Apple and Samsung) or wearable devices such as Misfit or Fitbit on the market or even a large object like a self-driving card of Google.
Especially, this trend does not only initiate changes in hardware companies but also influence software development companies; in a way that they need to build applications with capabilities to gather and analyze data received from those devices and equipment. For example, at Savvycom, we have been working on a mobile application system to connect with a fitness band to analyze health data and give a meaningful report on personal healthcare.
The next trend I want to talk about is SMAC model, which stands for Social, Mobile, Analytics, and Cloud. This technology model is the integration of all the above four technologies. For example, while social media enable a wide reach and new ways to interact with customers, analytics can help a business to gain deeper insights about them. Moreover, the migration from a weak computing system to Cloud also empower the data and technology accessibility of multiple mobile devices.
The last one is Virtual/ Augmented Reality. This technology helps create a virtual via 3D glasses or a 3D camera. I think this technology has raised a new wave of breakthrough products such as Oculus VR (bought and developed by Facebook) or HoloLens by Microsoft.
How those technologies transform the way companies do their business? Can you give some examples?
As I mentioned above, with the Internet of Things, there will be more and more things, devices and equipment get connected and transfer data over the Internet. This will help save the labor effort and increase the productivity of many different fields and industries. In addition, it will assist business a lot in gathering, analyzing and computing data accurately.
In terms of SMAC, gradually, companies will not have to use and maintain software on traditional PCs; instead, they will use mostly Software as a service available on the Internet. This will enable them to calculate the data size easier and reduce the maintenance cost of hardware and system. Moreover, with mobile devices, now people can do their business conveniently, anywhere, at any time.
About virtual reality, I think it brings greater experience and more interactions to users. In the future, this technology can be applied well in the retail industry, for example, to help enhance the customer experience with a new product line.
What will be the next big things in 2016?
Well, in my opinion, the Internet of Things and SMAC services will continue to dominate the IT sector. These technologies will be strongly developed and applied in many facets of life as well as enterprises.
So for companies that looking forward to implementing those technologies in the coming year, what are your recommendations to get started?
I think for Vietnamese companies, they should start to explore, invest and find ways to apply Cloud services more in their business processes. In the near future, this is also what companies from over the world will do as well.
